As big believers in starting the year right, we at Home Club will be kicking off 2012 with one of the most familiar names amidst the worldwide underground movement. Returning behind Home’s +65 decks for the fifth time running, drum and bass pioneer, Goldie (aka Clifford Price), needs little introduction, if at all.
A superstar in his own right, the legend that is Goldie has risen to fame over the past two decades, bringing and mastering his craft from the streets of Walsall, England to an audience with the royal family in Buckingham Palace just early last year (2011). As one of the biggest players in the international drum and bass scene, Goldie has sold over 2.5 million records and his debut album, Timeless, was also the first ever drum and bass album to break into the UK charts in 1995.
An artist through and through, besides being an established beat-maker and DJ, the multi-talented Goldie has also made a name for himself as a graffiti artist, with his latest Atheleticizm exhibition, a collaboration with Adidas, being held at London’s Underdog gallery in November 2011. And that’s not even counting his many forays into scoring for films, conducting music and appearing/acting in an array of TV shows and on the big screen.
Shuttling between his many duties (including daddy duty to his newborn daughter), Goldie found time in July 2011 to release FabricLive.58, under the FabricLive Mix Series, which features artistes such as Commix, Rido and Marcus Intalex, rounded off with his own magnum opus, Timeless, demonstrating once again his remarkable ability to remain relevant and progressive within an ever-evolving community.
This year, Goldie is set to bring the euphoria of drum and bass to his Home away from home. Rest assured that it will be nothing short of exceptional.
ENTRY:
$20 (with one drink)/ Happy hour until 11pm
ABOUT GOLDIE:
Pioneer, graffiti artist, drum ‘n’ bass icon, DJ, actor and producer.
Goldie is a total original, a multi-talented complex shape shifter, who’s sold more than 2.5 million records worldwide.
Against all odds, and despite a traumatic childhood, he succeeded in unleashing his boundless creativity from a very young age, having transformed an underground British sound into a mainstream international movement, whilst collaborating with major pop icons along the way.
Goldie has produced artistic works with 3D (Massive Attack) and Sarah Gregory, whilst being commissioned to produce pieces for Neneh Cherry, Noel Gallagher, Bjork, James Lavelle, Nellee Hooper, Kevin Spacey, The Sex Pistols, Snow Patrol, Pete Tong and Jason Statham to name but a few, depicting his prolific work.
Goldie earned his name as a graffiti artist in the West Midlands in the early eighties. His artwork around Birmingham and Wolverhampton was featured heavily in Afrikaa Bambaataa’s 1985 feature film documentary Bombing (which was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK). He took part in the largest British graffiti art battle alongside Bristol artist 3D, who later went on to form Massive Attack, and is also featured in the book Spraycan Art by Henry Chalfant & James Prigoff.
It was his move to London and a visit to the Rage Club in 1991 that things changed for the graffiti artist and the music genesis was born. DJ Fabio and Grooverider were playing that night and gave Goldie a taste of Jungle. He wanted more, and this gave him the drive and lust to make the smash, and incredible and haunting dark tune Terminator.
It was around this time that Goldie launched the infamous Sunday sessions at the Blue Note, which saw people come from all around the world to dance all night to his sets. The night was a massive hit, with stars such as David Bowie, Val Kilmer, and Josh Evans turning out, and it lead to endorsements with DC Shoes and Tequila Gold, With Goldie’s wide appeal he was then able to support acts such as Janes Addiction, Bjork and The Sex Pistols, even playing at the Viper room in L.A. for Johnny Depp.
Whilst Goldie was seeing the birth and growth of the now infamous Drum and Bass label Metalheadz, he found the time to create an album which to this day, is as it is titled, “Timeless”!
Many of the public don’t know the ‘Goldie’ above, but have learned about him from his many TV appearances on shows such as Shooting Stars, The Jo Whiley Show, and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. He also took part in ‘Stars in Fast Cars’ which saw Goldie beat other celebs to win the wacky show.
Goldies first film role was in David Bowies gritty northern gangland flick “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”. This led to a part in Guy Ritchie’s classic “Snatch” and then in James Bond’s “The World Is Not Enough”. In these three films Goldie worked alongside such actors as Brad Pitt, Robert Carlyle, Robbie Coltrane, Denise Richards and Vinnie Jones.
Next for Goldie was a role in Eastenders as ‘Angel’, and he became a favourite with many of the (Eastenders) fans.
Just recently Goldie appeared in the highly successful BBC Maestro, where he was runner up with the audience vote, and winner with the judges panel. He was then asked to score a piece of music for the Proms, which he did magnificently called “Sine Tempore”. A two-part BBC documentary followed, “Classic Goldie” portraying his wonderful talent, not only for writing and scoring music for an orchestra and choir, but for his art as well.
Soon afterwards he spoke out to try and recruit social workers on a national tv campaign, which won him huge public support for his cause, portraying his true acting abilities.
Last year Goldie released ” Sine Tempus” , the soundtrack to his Original Screen play (that is 8 years in the making) which he will be directing himself, and this year an album called “Memoirs of an after life”.
Following on from his hugely successful 2007 London solo art show “Love Over Gold”, 2009 saw Goldie bring us “The Kids Are All Riot”, a stunning installation of art in the duplex Maverick showroom space, with the likes of Ian Brown attending and commenting on the beauty of his work.
His next art show will be the “Lock Up”, in conjunction with creative events specialists “Death By Daylight”, to be held in a secret London location on Nov 19th.
Goldie has just completed, for the second consecutive year, all of the artwork, and album sleeves for International DJ & artist Pete Tong’s Ibiza club brand “Wonderland” and he is currently remixing Calvin Harris’s new track “Flashback”. Goldie is also set to re-record and score “Timeless”, where it will be taken to the main stage with a full orchestra and choir.
“I’ve learned so much from my mistakes, I’m thinking of making a few more”. Goldie
